Weekend Getaway: Denmark
Now that we can go to Denmark without having to quarantine, it’s one of the best destinations for a weekend getaway! What better way to kick off Autumn than gorgeous Denmark, where you can embrace the world-famous lifestyle: hygge! We have compiled a list of the top 4 cities in Denmark you can travel to that's perfect for a weekend getaway.
Before we get started, let us inform you of all the newly implemented rules and regulations that you need to follow in the country for safe travel. Face masks are required on all public transportation, as well as in the airports, so keep your mask on after your flight. Keep a safe distance of at least 1 metre with people in public spaces at all times if possible.
Now that you know the rules, let’s get started!
Copenhagen
The first city on our list is, of course, the capital city of Denmark, Copenhagen. As one of the world’s cleanest, most sustainable cities, it also tops the world’s most livable! It’s hard not to see why; with its incredible cycling culture, ridiculously beautiful architecture and mouthwatering cuisine.
Visit Nyhavn, the most iconic attraction in Copenhagen for the most stunning pictures! Here you can also see where the Danish author Hans Christian Anderson lived while he wrote some of the most treasured fairytales. Copenhagen is also home to the world’s longest pedestrian street, Strøget, which is a paradise for shopaholics! The Vesterbro neighbourhood is also well worth a visit because of its trendy restaurants, funky bars and charming boutiques.
Aarhus
Next up on our list is the lovely Aarhus! Although it has urbanised and become the go-to destination for festival-lovers and art buffs alike, the Danish city still retains some of its small-town charm. It’s best to explore the city on foot, so you can truly soak up all it has to offer!
Stroll through the cobblestoned streets of the Latin Quarter where you will find gorgeous architecture, a vibrant atmosphere and delicious food! The Frederiksbjerg borough is also a must-visit in Aarhus, with cute cafes, lush gardens and gourmet restaurants.
Odense
The vibrant city of Odense is next in our list! The hometown of author Hans Christian Andersen is just as fairy-tale-like as his books. The city’s vast collection of art, along with its incredible music scene, opera and architecture, makes it the ultimate destination for a weekend getaway full of culture.
A must-see in Odense is, ofcourse, Hans Christian Andersen’s home, as well as the H.C. Andersen Museum dedicated in his honour. The museum offers visitors a unique experience, as you can dive into the author’s world through his artwork, mementos and other artefacts. Another highlight in the city is the Odense cathedral, which has a history that dates back more than 900 years!
Aalborg
Last but not least, we have the capital of North Jutland, Aalborg! Known for its buzzing nightlife and Viking burial ground, Aalborg is full of stunning architecture and rich history.
The main highlight of Aalborg is the Utzon Centre, a cultural centre located in the gorgeous waterfront of Aalborg. It hosts a variety of exhibitions throughout the year and showcases the best of Nordic architecture and design. Another attraction on the waterfront is the House of Music, which is home to the Aalborg Symphony Orchestra!
So there you have it, we’ve told you all about the top four cities in Denmark you should consider for a lovely weekend getaway. Start your Autumn right and watch the leaves turn crisp in Copenhagen, Aarhus, Odense or Aalborg. All four cities have their own unique charm, so you won’t go wrong with any choice!
