Easily one of Australia's most exciting cities, Darwin is a compact yet cosmopolitan destination with a dramatic history. The city is the capital of the Northern Territory, a vast and largely unspoiled wilderness covering the north of the country. Being so close to Asia has left its mark on the city, with lots of markets and restaurants offering mouthwatering Asian ingredients and menus. The population may be just over 100,000 but the city is home to more than 50 nationalities, making it one of the most diverse you will find anywhere in the world. Book your tickets now to experience this tropical melting pot of a city.
The history of Darwin is as remarkable as the place itself. Settlers from Europe first tried to found a city here in 1824 but the harsh climate meant that several attempts to populate the area failed. A settlement called Palmerston persisted from 1869, enduring destructive cyclones in 1878, 1882 and 1897. The surviving town was renamed in 1911, after the famous scientist, Charles Darwin. The city was bombed 60 times in World War II, with the many ships in the natural harbour making for a prime target. Cyclone Tracy then nearly destroyed the city in 1974. Today, Darwin is far more peaceful and a great base to explore Australia's wild 'Top End' and the beauty of Kimberley and Kakadu.
The city has a tropical climate, with a wet season from November to April and a dry season from May to October. You will find every kind of music being played in the clubs and bars and also on the street. The local seafood is fantastic and the beach culture is family-friendly and laid-back. You can try everything from sports fishing on the Timor Sea to crocodile hunting or even enjoy the Deckchair Cinema that takes place in the dry season at the harbour.
Darwin is a great destination in itself as well as being an ideal base from which to explore the vast Northern Territory. It is perfect for those who enjoy an outdoor lifestyle and all manner of watersports, but equally it also has lots to offer lovers of culture and food. Cruises have recently become popular. Here are some highlights to consider on your visit.
